March 7, 2013 - Below is an excerpt from an article recently written about Mike.  There's lots more to read so be sure to check out the full article!

Michael, when was your first desire to become involved in art and the Blues music?
I love Music. Music and Musicians a lyrical expression of an image; I’m just lucky enough to be able to capture that expression. My connection with the International Blues Foundation began from a newspaper article. I had just painted BB KING, and had a few hundred lithographs printed, when I read an article about the Blues Foundation needing some donations. So I drove down to their offices in Memphis, Tennessee, double parked, and delivered one hundred Lithographs, to help them raise some much need funds. A couple of years passed and John Hahn, Shemekia Copeland’s manager, emailed me and told me to expect a phone call from Jay Sielman, the Director of the Blues Foundation. Jay asked me if I would be willing to paint the 2006 BMA Poster, I did, and I’ve been donating to and painting for the Blues Foundation ever since.

What does Blues Folk Art mean to you and what does offer you?
I don’t paint folk art, my ART is more impressionistic. But it offers me the chance to paint the colorful stars of the Blues World. It lets me express my joy and love for the music, the beat, the soul, that erupts from the Blues Players. Blues musicians don’t jump into the Music Business for fame and fortune, they play the Blues, because they LOVE it. And they allow me to portray that love.

What do you learn about yourself from the colors, paintbrushes, music and Blues Folk culture?
I’ve a 16 year, 10 time cancer survivor, the Bright Colors I use were my savings grace from the torture and pain of Chemotherapy. I’m also a writer, and in many cases I’ve lived the blues, which helps when I try and capture the Blues Artists essence.

a Rose is a Rose, except when it's a Daisy,

CHESS MATE
By Michael P. Maness

I have a strategy that I must consider, To do A, B, or C ?
A would be fun, B involves a Girl, and C, lets me be me.
A would take me out of country, B, could be some sex,
I think I choose C, I've had a shrink or two tell me I'm complex.

Seize the day is fine, but seize the heart is the plan-
get close, give a hug, take a stand-

I'm a lover, not a fighter, give me a Kiss, I don't bite.
I nibble a little bit.

its a beautiful sunny afternoon, no rain in sight,

today is a day of wrongs, and very few rights,
a time to take a walk down a PATH of THOUGHT.

March 30, 2012 - This is my latest venture for the BLUES FOUNDATION.

March 28, 2012 - 'Tis been a month when the creative bug has bitten me, 7 times.  I noticed last year I was lax in paintings of people, and especially Music People, and in that category, the Blues. I decided that a good beginning into 2012 would be a few paintings that might cause ya'll to hum.  I've also been wanting to paint a Church, that literally could inspire a style of preaching.  (Drum roll) I present

FIRE AND BRIMSTONE
30"x36" Gallery Wrapped FOR SALE
The preacher of this little RED Church had a reputation for causing chills, and describing terrifying thrills. He would make you shiver in the his command of the English language, his tone, and his fiery rhetoric about GOD, and readings from the Bible. His speech had such Hell and Damnation in it when you left you could imagine the FIRE in the sky.

COME TO JESUS
24"X36" FOR SALE
He'd been on point all night long. His pitch, perfect, and he seemed to have the ability to hold a note for what seemed like 10-20 minutes, It was his show,.he couldn't miss tonight, everything was right on target. It was then, near the end of his solo, that he felt it,.it was a feeling like none he ever felt before,..it wasn't a Kodak moment, more like a "Come to Jesus" event.

IN THE MOMENT
LAST CALL. All he could think about was that night he was accused of being an "Energizer Bunny", he had such energy, it couldn't be just the music, it couldn't be his "High" over his mastery of the 88 Keys, what was the reason the night was so right. He just finished his shot and beer, it was the end of the night, the crowd has left,..it was him "IN THE MOMENT".

WILD STEVIE RAY VAUGHN
24"x36" FOR SALE
It was such a crowd, the heat caused by the conductivity of the music could have caused a fire. It already had it's spark, the unbelievable Stevie Ray Vaughn. He worked his way through the throng, bobbing and weaving, getting skinny and small till he was at the front of stage, just under the Man himself. He was wondering what could extinguish the flames, when he rain of sweat pouring down from the Stars on the stage. He didn't mind, this was a part of history, and he was right in the front.

ARIA
12"X30" Gallery Wrapped FOR SALE
As they left the theater, the ARIA hung in their minds. They could help but HUM the tune as they walked down the street. Without even noticing, they broke into a Waltz, they were humming the tune and dancing down the street. They didn't notice they were drawing an audience themselves, they didn't care. They were on their way to celebrate the music, by visiting their favorite Wine Bar, and by partaking in their much anticipated drink, they couldn't wait to savor a glass of "ARIA."

LADY AND THE DRAGON
24"X24" GALLERY WRAPPED SOLD

10 to 3
12"x30" GALLERY WRAPPED
Donated to The Humane Society of Palm Beach Florida
Been sitting in the stands all day watching race after race. Loosing, you have spent a few hundred dollars on 6 loosing races,.you've been close, but not once were you on or for that matter in the money. This was your last chance, the race had begun, searching through the binoculars you chuckle, your first laugh of the day, as you are watching the tight race between the horses 10 to 3,..you notice the time is 10 to 4.

CANOPY OF BLUES
24"x36" For Sale
You've taken a wrong turn, your heart is pounding in the anticipation of a road that you may recognize. Then on your right you witness a road that calms you, your pounding heart is no longer, in fact it is in the past, it is forgotten. All you can see, or feel is the nirvana, the beauty that is guarding an Autumn Canopy, filled with the colors of fall, and to strengthen the shadows there dwells the deep shade of blue. You leave your car, and begin walking all around the path, then you take steps into the beauty, an adventure in color, a path to Utopia. Instantly you forget that you are almost out of gas.

MEETING OF TROLLEYS
24"X36" For sale
Walking down South Main in Memphis, Tennessee. You have just passed the new home of the "Blues Foundation", and your about to look in the window at "See the Difference Interiors", when you see Two Trolleys stopped right in front of you. I thought about as a children's book where the Trolleys were having a conversation about the day, the weather, and what they were going do when the work day is over. I could hear their voices along with the ding, ding of the bell. In this view you can feel the mystery hidden in the cobalt shadows as they drift along a brightly lit lavender road. You want to know what they know, you are waiting for their story.
